A tooth bridge is used to replace a tooth that is lost.
Tooth loss can have a significant impact on dental health. Teeth rely on each other for support. Even if a solitary tooth is lost, the teeth adjacent to it lose their support, and begin to tilt or drift. The opposing teeth i.e. upper or lower teeth also start to shift downwards or upwards respectively. This may result in changes in the bite, and put stress on the jaws, muscles and teeth. It is also difficult to clean the teeth, and may lead to decay and gum disease. If untreated, it can necessitate removal of the opposing tooth.
A tooth bridge consists of a replacement tooth (or teeth) that is attached to crowns on each side. The bridge is cemented to the teeth next to the missing tooth (or teeth) and prevents the tilting or drifting of other teeth. A bridge can also be made over implants if multiple teeth are missing.
